Figures calculated using results drawn between 27/09/2016 and 10/11/2020.

This column displays the percentage of the prize fund allocated to each prize level. The remaining 10% goes into a separate fund, known as the Booster Fund, which is used to ensure there is always enough for the advertised minimum jackpot of €17 million. EuroMillions occasionally holds special draws or promotions, where the guaranteed minimum jackpot can be increased up to as much as €130 million, using surplus funds from the Booster Fund.

The 50% allocated to the jackpot only applies for the first five draws in a series of rollovers. Once the top prize has rolled over five times in a row, the ‘Match 5 + 2’ allocation is adjusted down to 42% until the jackpot gets won. The remaining 8% goes to the Booster Fund, ensuring that this reserve pot receives 18% of funds from the sixth draw in a rollover series until the jackpot is won.

The lowest and highest prize amounts for each prize tier, other than the jackpot, are in respect of individual winning tickets.
The Match 5 + 2 Lucky Stars prize values represent the total jackpot amounts regardless of how many winning tickets there were.

All prize data included in the table above relates to EuroMillions lottery draw results since 27th September 2016 when the Lucky Star pool increased from 11 numbers to 12. The details provided are for information purposes only and are not indicative of future prize values.

The Huge Difference Between Odds and Probability

Odds and probability are two different terms with two different equations.  The difference between the two can be best describe when we study the composition of combinations.

As a lotto player, you don’t have the power to change the underlying probability and you cannot beat the odds of the Euromillions game.  But you have the power to know all the possible choices and make the right decision based on those choices.

And making the right choice is possible when you know the difference between odds and probability.

What is the difference?

Probability refers to the measurement that an event will likely occur.  And we measure the likelihood by using the formula:

Changes to euromillions

We normally expressed the results of this formula in percentage.

Now, to get the odds, we use this formula instead:

Changes to euromillions

What you get from this formula is a ratio.

So the difference is that the probability is the measurement of chance while the odds are the ratio of success to failure.

In layman’s term, the difference between odds and probability can be described in the following way:

Probability = Chance

Odds = Advantage

That is, you cannot control the probability and you cannot beat the odds, but at least you can choose the best odds and get the best ratio of success to failure.

Let’s consider the combination 2-4-6-8-10. This combination is composed of 5 even numbers with no odd numbers. This combination belongs to the 0-odd-5-even group.

In the Euromillions game, there are 53,130 ways you can combine 5 numbers that are all even numbers and no odd numbers.

Therefore we calculate the odds of a 0-odd-5-even in the following way:

Odds of 5-even-0-odd = 53,130 / 2,065,630

This means that 2-4-6-8-10 and all similar combinations under the group of 0-odd-5-even will give you 2 or 3 opportunities to match the winning combinations for every 100 attempts that you play the Euromillions game.

As you can see, a combination such as 2-4-6-8-10 offers a very low ratio of success.

In comparison, you will have a better ratio of success when you pick a more balanced odd and even numbers.

Let’s prove that.

There are 690,000 ways you can combine numbers of type 3-odd-2-even. If we calculate the odds, we get:

Odds of 3-odd-2-even = 690,000 / 1,428,760

In simple terms, a 3-odd-2-even combination will give you the opportunity to match the winning numbers 32 to 33 times in every 100 attempts that you play the Euromillions game.

If we compare the two classes of combinations, we can see a big difference:

0-odd-5-even VS 3-odd-2-even

0-odd-5-even 3-odd-2-even
2 to 3 opportunities to match the winning numbers in every 100 draws 32 to 33 opportunities to match the winning numbers in every 100 draws
The worst ratio of success The best ratio of success
The worst choice An intelligent choice

In a random event like the Euromillions game, making an intelligent choice requires mathematical strategy.  We calculate all the possible choices and finally make an intelligent choice.

Remember this: As a EuroMillions player, your objective is to get a better ratio of success to failure. Know all the possible choices and make an intelligent choice.

I explained the details of this mathematical strategy in my article The Lottery and the Winning Formula of Combinatorial Math and Probability Theory.

But to give you a gist of how to make an intelligent choice, let’s dig deeper through these combinatorial patterns below.

The Odds of Winning The EuroMillions

The National Lottery EuroMillions game is a 5/50 lottery format. So the rule is to pick five numbers from 1 to 50. We compute the total combinations by using the Binomial Coefficient formula.

So there are 2 million possible ways to combine five numbers in EuroMillions.  However, to win the jackpot, you are required to match the extra two lucky stars so that the actual odds become one is to 139.8 million.

If you think about your odds, you have a better chance of becoming the next Prime Minister of the U.K. In short; it is tough to win in the EuroMillions.

In perspective, on the average, you have 139.8 million attempts to win the jackpot.  If you play 100 tickets every week, then you have 1.4 million weeks or 27,000 years to hit the jackpot.

Twenty-seven thousand years is such a long time. You’ve got to be very lucky to win.

The EuroMillions lottery is a random game. You cannot predict the next winning numbers.

So, if superstitions, hot numbers, lucky numbers, quick pick, and a random selection will not help, what will?

Mathematics remains the only tool.

November 2009 – Changes to EuroMillions Format

On 7th November 2009, EuroMillions’ 11-rollover limit was replaced by a jackpot cap of €185 million. In the event of the jackpot reaching €185 million, it would remain there for one additional draw before being rolled down to winners in the next prize tier. Additionally, the jackpot cap would be increased by €5 million once reached.

The price of a EuroMillions ticket also increased from £1.50 to £2. The price increase heralded the launch of a new supplementary raffle game, ‘Millionaire Raffle’, on 13th November. Included in the EuroMillions ticket’s new price, UK players would get the chance to win a guaranteed €1 million every week by matching the raffle code printed on their ticket with the code revealed during a EuroMillions draw.

Changes Summary

  • Rollover cap replaced by €185 million jackpot cap, increased by €5 million each time it is reached
  • New supplementary ‘Millionaire Raffle’ introduced in the UK
  • Ticket price increased from £1.50 to £2.

September 2016 – EuroMillions Overhaul

September 2016 saw sweeping changes made to the EuroMillions format, including the introduction of new supplementary games in six countries and a €2 million increase to the minimum jackpot. The price of entry was increased as follows:

Austria €2.00 €2.20
Belgium €2.00 €2.50
Ireland €2.00 €2.50
Luxembourg €2.00 €2.50
Portugal €2.00 €2.50
Spain €2.00 €2.50
Switzerland CHF3.00 CHF3.50
UK £2.00 £2.50

The price change covered the cost of new raffles and supplementary games implemented across Europe. With the new games came the introduction of a Europe-wide raffle event, the European Millionaire Maker. The first European Millionaire Maker raffle took place on Friday 28th October 2016, with 25 winning codes selected.

Another big change was the introduction to the game of a 12th Lucky Star; the odds of winning in each prize tier changed as a result:

Match 5 + 2 Stars 1 in 116,531,800 1 in 139,838,160
Match 5 + 1 Star 1 in 6,473,989 1 in 6,991,908
Match 5 1 in 3,236,995 1 in 3,107,515
Match 4 + 2 Stars 1 in 517,920 1 in 621,503
Match 4 + 1 Star 1 in 28,774 1 in 31,076
Match 3 + 2 Stars 1 in 11,771 1 in 14,126
Match 4 1 in 14,387 1 in 13,812
Match 2 + 2 Stars 1 in 882 1 in 986
Match 3 + 1 Star 1 in 654 1 in 707
Match 3 1 in 327 1 in 314
Match 1 + 2 Stars 1 in 157 1 in 188
Match 2 + 1 Stars 1 in 46 1 in 50
Match 2 1 in 23 1 in 22
The overall odds of winning a prize remained at 1 in 13.

The UK’s popular ‘Mega Friday’ promotional draw — which saw multiple £1 million raffle prizes and luxury non-cash prizes awarded on the last Friday of each month – also saw a major change. The event was expanded to offer prizes in two consecutive draws and was renamed ‘Mega Week’.

All changes came into effect as of Saturday 24th September 2016, with the very first Mega Week beginning on Tuesday 27th September. Ten raffle prizes of £1 million plus a 100-day round-the-world trip were given out, and a special €130 million Superdraw took place on Friday 30th September. Mega Week ran for nine months, with the last Mega Week draws taking place on Tuesday 25th and Friday 28th June 2017.

Changes Summary (General)

  • Minimum jackpot increased from €15 million to €17 million
  • European Millionaire Maker raffle introduced
  • Ticket price increased in all participating countries
  • The number of draws in which the jackpot could stay at its cap before triggering a rolldown increased from two to five

Why Prizes Differ Between Currencies

The Euro is the base currency for EuroMillions as it is used by seven of the nine participating countries. When a jackpot is won in the UK the equivalent figure in pounds is paid out, based on the exchange rate on the day of the draw.

For non-jackpot prizes, the amount you receive in the UK is not worked out purely on the basis of the exchange rate. Instead, a formula is in place to take into account each country’s contribution to the game.

Each country that participates in EuroMillions contributes €1.10 into the Common Prize Fund, which is used to pay out prizes to all winners. Camelot’s contribution to the Common Prize Fund is the 50% of £1.74 from every EuroMillions ticket sold.

If, using the exchange rates on the day of a draw, Camelot’s contribution to the Common Prize Fund works out at less than €1.10, prizes paid out to UK players will be reduced to compensate for the shortfall. If, on the other hand, Camelot’s contribution amounts to more than €1.10, UK winners will receive comparatively bigger prizes than winners in other countries.

To put it simply, if £1.74 is worth less than €2.20, UK winners will receive smaller prizes than those in other countries. If £1.74 is worth more than €2.20, UK players will receive more. These rules ensure that prizes are always in line with how much each participating country contributes to the Common Prize Fund.
